Will I Ever Return to Blogging?
August 30th, 2011On this blog, my personal blog, this is the first update I’ve made in over two and a half years. For the other infamous blog, Richard’s Ramblings, I’ve only penned one entry in the same two and a half years — and that was almost 18 months ago.
Getting back to blogging has been on my mind a lot in the past year or so. I miss it, and now almost daily I think to myself, “That would make a good blog topic!” But I have a huge hurdle to cross, namely overcoming the massive force of inertia. Even now, there are significant distractions, the biggest being that, as I write this, there is a large banner across my screen informing me that I am running on WordPress MU 2.6.2 and that it’s time to upgrade to 3.2.1. That’s not as simple as clicking an Upgrade button; there is no MU build anymore, and I need to do a full re-install. I also keep personal and business blogs separate (for reliability and hacking vulnerability reasons), so both servers have to be maintained. Frankly, I’ve just lost track of how many blogs I have and where they are. Since I have to upgrade everything anyway, do I consider jumping ship to another platform?
Richard’s Ramblings also suffered a number of hurdles:
- That whole Stephanie Adams debacle consumed a lot of energy that could have been redirected to more fruitful ventures. She could have just solved the whole thing by going away earlier and letting me move on to other topics.
- I lost sight of the vision of the blog. Was it just ramblings? Was it tech-related and informative? Was it about half-naked women? Was it about English grammar or JavaScript libraries? Website usability? I attempted to split off a few interesting things onto staunt.com, but I quickly became uncertain if I even liked that domain name, so everything was put on hold. I’m still not sure. Using designedsimply.com makes sense to host the design and usability topics, but does that mean I need to maintain completely separate blogs for all those interests? Common sense (and business sense) says “Yes”, but my personal blogosphere needs much more planning and design effort than I currently have time for.
- It almost became more interesting to talk about the increased popularity of the blog than to spend the many hours every week to maintain the blog by continuing to add interesting content. That’s when I knew it was time to put everything on hold — which I did.
Will I ever start blogging regularly again? The short and long answer is: Maybe. Probably. Most likely. If for no other reason than I need to reestablish an online resume/portfolio.
